HIGHLIGHTS ON
SMILE PROJECT
Protect the Children collaborated with Stanford University to implement the SMILE project at Prolific Secondary School in Kathmandu, Nepal
Used by schools across the US and around the world, the SMILE (Stanford Mobile Inquiry Learning Environment) app encourages children to expand their learning beyond the classroom. It helps develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
The app was created by Professor Paul Kim, Chief Technology Officer and Assistant Dean of the Graduate School of Education at Stanford. Capucine – then a teenage long-time supporter of children in Nepal – contacted Professor Kim who generously allowed her to implement SMILE at Prolific Secondary School, a school of 400 students in the heart of Kathmandu, and to use it for free, after training her.
In June 2016, Capucine visited Kathmandu with another volunteer, and Professor Kim’s assistant, Wilson, to get the SMILE system set up at the school, where they trained the teachers and students. Through Protect the Children, Capucine was also able to donate 15 tablets for the students to use SMILE, in addition to their old school computers.
"We’re so grateful. Our students are loving the SMILE app and learning with tablet technology. Homework has never been so much fun!" - R. Sharma, Prolific Principal.
